How do I change my IMAP password?
Last modified on 29 August 2017 08:33 PM

In general, you may configure your StartMail account to work with your email client* using the IMAP protocol just one time. If you should change your StartMail account password, your IMAP account configuration will not be affected. You may, however, need to change your IMAP password in your email client account configuration.**

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. From a Web browser, log in to your StartMail account
  2. Click the Settings link from the top, right corner of your StartMail page
  3. From the Settings menu, select Mobile/IMAP
  4. Delete the IMAP configuration from the list of "devices" you wish to modify. (You will be required to enter your StartMail account password to verify your identity)
  5. Select the Add Device button to generate a new IMAP password.
  6. Enter a description in the Device Name textbox. (iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, etc.)
  7. Enter your StartMail account password in the textbox provided
  8. Select the Add Device button
  9. The Add Device Password screen will be displayed with your new IMAP password.  (Please note: your incoming and outgoing server information may have changed.  Compare the values for these fields with your current email client account configuration, and update them as needed)

* What is an email client?

An email client is software that is used to access and manage a user's email.  Examples include Mozilla Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook, which is used on a computer or the native email client that is built-in to devices such as an Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy.

** What exceptions might require an IMAP password change?

If your email client stops working correctly, perhaps you can no longer send or receive mail, to resolve your issue, you may remove your email client account configuration, change your IMAP password, and re-configure your StartMail account in your email client. Or, a security issue may prompt you to change your IMAP password.
