How do I change my PGP passphrase?

IMPORTANT WARNING: If you forget your PGP passphrase, you will not be able to recover it and you will lose access to all previously encrypted messages. If this is the case, you must generate a new PGP key pair, to encrypt future messages.

Your PGP passphrase is a sequence of words or other text that is used to control access to your encrypted mail. Your PGP passphrase does not expire.  If you wish to change your PGP passphrase, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your StartMail account at https://startmail.com/login on your desktop or laptop.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Mail Encryption.



  3. Click the Change Passphrase button toward the bottom of the screen. 



  4. In the text boxes provided, enter your current PGP passphrase, your new PGP passphrase and re-enter your PGP passphrase Create a unique passphrase. Do not use the password you're using to enter your StartMail account. Instead, you could use a line from your favorite song. Please note that spaces, capital letters and punctuation will be taken into consideration. StartMail will determine your passphrase strength. Try to get it to "very strong".



  5. Click the Change Passphrase button. A confirmation message will be displayed.

NOTES:
- Although your PGP passphrase has changed, your PGP key pair will remain the same. Therefore, your StartMail messages that have been encrypted and decrypted using your PGP key pair will still be accessible to you.
