Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificate
Last modified on 11 November 2017 10:23 PM

StartMail uses an enhanced version of the traditional SSL certificate to provide additional assurance that you are safely connected to the actual web site. The presence of an Extended Validation (EV) certificate is indicated by the text "StartMail B.V. [NL]" next to the StartMail URL in your browser's address bar.

Traditional SSL certificates provide basic information about the certificate holder, as well as the organization that issued the certificate (the Certificate Authority). However, the amount of validation done to confirm the identity of the organization requesting the certificate varies considerably. To obtain an EV SSL certificate, the certificate holder must first go through a rigorous validation process to confirm itself as a legally-established business or organization with a verifiable identity.

By providing an EV SSL certificate, you are assured that the certificate issuer has taken the following steps:
* Established the legal identity as well as the operational and physical presence of website owner;
* Established that the applicant is the domain name owner or has exclusive control over the domain name; and
* Confirmed the identity and authority of the individuals acting for the website owner, and that documents pertaining to legal obligations are signed by an authorized officer.

To review our EV SSL certificate, click on the lock icon next to your address bar and follow your browser's instructions to learn more about the certificate. To learn more about EV SSL standards and SSL technology, please click here.
