What is the little eye in Internet Explorer and is my password secure?

If you've used Internet Explorer lately, you might have noticed a new feature in a password field that looks like this:

This has nothing to do with StartMail. It's called the "password reveal feature," and it's a feature of IE 10 and above. The idea behind it is that you can press the eye icon, which will reveal your password, allowing you to verify whether you've entered it correctly.  It potentially poses a minor security threat, as anyone over your shoulder could momentarily see your password while you have chosen to revealed it.
