StartMail, IMAP, and system folder synchronization
Last modified on 26 February 2018 01:56 AM

By default, StartMail organizes your mail into several basic folders:

  • Sent
  • Trash
  • Drafts
  • Spam

If you use an IMAP client to retrieve your email, you may notice that the folders IMAP uses are not exactly the same as shown in StartMail's web interface. StartMail's web folders and their IMAP labels correspond as follows:

Web IMAP
Sent Sent Messages
Trash Deleted Messages
Drafts Drafts
Spam Junk

In some cases, an IMAP client may not correctly replicate StartMail's folders, leading to cases where apparent duplicate folders are shown over IMAP. For example, you may see two "Sent" folders, or separate "Spam" and "Junk" folders under your StartMail account in your IMAP client. Many IMAP clients provide tools to resolve these inconsistencies.

Outlook 2010

Sent and Trash folders: Go to File: Account settings: Double-click on the account, and then select More Settings. Under tab: Sent Items, you can change the Sent folder to “Sent Messages”

Tab: Deleted Items allows you to change the Trash folder to “Deleted Messages”.

Draft email messages can be dragged to the “Drafts” folder hierarchically one level below Inbox.

Spam email will automatically be added to the “Junk” email folder.

Any emails you have left in your Outlook system folders can easily be dragged into StartMail folders, after which they will be synchronized with StartMail and will appear in your web mail within the appropriate folders.

Thunderbird

Sent folder: Go to Accounts: View settings for this account: Copies & Folders, and for option "When sending messages, automatically - Place a copy in”, Select “Other”, and Select “Sent messages” on [yourAccount]@startmail.com.

Drafts: Go to Accounts: View settings for this account: Copies & Folders, and for Drafts and Templates: Keep message draft in: “Drafts” folder in, enter your StartMail email address.

Trash: Go to Accounts: View settings for this account: Server settings, set “when I delete a message” to “Move it into this folder: Deleted Messages”. Any emails you have left in your ThunderBird system folders can easily be dragged into the StartMail folders, after which they will be synchronized with StartMail webmail.

K-9

All system folders can be set by navigating to Account: Settings: Account settings: Folders:, and then making the following adjustments:

Drafts folder should be set to “Drafts”

Sent folder should be set to “Sent Messages”

Spam folder should be set to “Junk”

Trash folder should be set to “Deleted Messages”

Any emails you have left in your K-9 system folders can easily be dragged into StartMail folders, after which they will be synchronized with StartMail and will appear in your web mail within the appropriate folders.
