Digital legacy refers to electronic or online data that a user leaves behind when they die.
For StartMail account holders
It's not possible to set up a legacy contact for your account. If you want someone else to be able to access your account after you pass away, make sure you leave them a password or recovery code for your account somewhere.
Requesting access to a deceased friend or family member's account
The StartMail email systems are designed privacy-first and all data is fully encrypted. It's not possible to access any account data without a password. Not even for our StartMail staff. It's only possible to access an account if you have the login details. There are multiple ways in which this can be configured.
Situation (1)
You have the password for the StartMail.com account. In this case you can simply login on https://mail.startmail.com/
Situation (2)
You have a recovery code for the StartMail.com account. In this case, you can set a new password by going to https://mail.startmail.com/password-recovery/set-new-password
Situation (3)
A confirmed alternative email address was configured as the recovery email, and you have access to this alternative email address. In this case, you can request a password reset link on https://mail.startmail.com/password-recovery
If you're able to access the account with these methods, you can also cancel or delete the account after logging in.
If none of these options apply to your situation, it means the email account cannot be accessed.
Cancelling account
StartMail email subscriptions automatically renew. The renewal payment often fails automatically after some time. If you want us to stop the subscription, payment(s) and/or process a refund, please send a message to support@startmail.com so we can help out.
