StartMail offers full text searching within your emails. This means you can simply enter the term you remember from an email and input it as a search term to find it. Please note that this does not apply to encrypted emails, and you can only find those by searching for the sender/recipient or subject title.
How to search?
- Look for the Search Mail field with the magnifying glass icon in the blue bar above your email.
- Enter your search query and press Enter or click on the magnifying glass icon.
- Your search results are shown. The results will also show the folder in which the email was found.
- To clear your search term when you want to search again, press the X next to the search term.
Search operators
In case your search query returns too many results, you can use search operators to limit your search results. This allows you to limit your search results to only search within a specific folder, or for a specific recipient or subject.
When using this function, be sure to leave no space between the colon (:) and the search term.
For the Date operator, the year is listed first. After the year, the first number that follows is the month and the second number is the day.
Operator |
Example |

cc |
cc:catherine |
Message recipient listed in the cc-header |
bcc |
bcc:dave |
Message recipient listed in the bcc-header |
date |

subject |
subject:dinner |
Message subject |
body |

NOT term |
NOT subject:dinner |
|
term1 AND term2 |
subject:dinner AND from:adam |
|
term1 OR term2 |
subject:dinner OR body:drinks |
|
Note that the "NOT", "AND" and "OR" operators must be written in upper case. By default, search terms are combined using "AND", so "subject:dinner from:adam" is the same as "subject:dinner AND from:adam". The "AND" operator takes precedence over the "OR" operator, so "subject:dinner AND from:adam OR body:drinks" is the same as "(subject:dinner AND from:adam) OR body:drinks".
Exceptions
If your search terms contain spaces, use single quotation marks at the beginning and at the end of the terms.
