This article will guide you through creating Aliases in a Custom Domain Account.
In brief, an alias allows you to send and receive email at an email address different from your main StartMail account address. StartMail aliases in a Custom Domain Account (CDA) end with @use.startmail.com, but they can also end with your own domain. As a result, an email alias will look similar to the format: your_email_alias@use.startmail.com OR your_email_alias@yourdomain.com.
Alias types
You can create two different types of aliases:
-
A Custom alias, where you choose your own address ending with @use.startmail.com OR with @yourdomain.com
-
A Quick alias, where the address name is system-generated and also ends with @use.startmail.com OR with @yourdomain.com
There is no limit to the number of aliases you can create. Please note that emails sent to and from aliases will appear in your account's Inbox and Sent folders, just like emails sent to or from your main StartMail email address. Aliases do not have their own folders, although you can create a filter so incoming messages can go to a specific folder.
Why use an alias?
-
Quick alias: Let’s say you want to purchase something online (concert tickets, for instance) that requires registration. You do not want to share your primary StartMail address, but you also do not want to deal with the hassle of creating/managing a separate email account. By using a quick alias, the vendor cannot spam you once the quick alias expires. Your inbox stays spam-free!
-
Custom alias: Data leaks have unfortunately become common. If you need an email address to register for an online message board or service, you might want to sign up using a custom alias. If your email address ever leaks and spammers get to it, you can simply deactivate or delete the alias and senders will get a bounce back message.
Create an alias
-
Click on Settings > Aliases > Create Alias.
-
A pop-up window opens. Select which type of alias you want to create.
Quick alias:
-
Your alias: StartMail generates the first part of your alias. Choose the domain you want your alias to end with.
-
Display name: Enter the name you want to be displayed with the alias address.
-
Expiration: Select the expiration time of your alias to "1 Hour", "1 Day", "1 Week", "1 Month" or take "None" if you do not want it to expire.
-
Click on Create alias.

-
Click on Create alias.
Create an alias from compose view
It is also possible to create an alias directly when composing a message.
-
Click on the Create alias link on the Compose screen.
-
The steps are the same as when creating an alias from the Settings menu.
-
After you have created the alias, it is automatically selected as the address from which you will send your message.
Edit an alias
-
Click the Edit button to the right of an alias.
-
On the next screen, change the Display name and/or expiration time. Click Update alias to save your changes.
(De)activate an alias
-
Under Settings > Aliases, click the toggle on the left side of the alias address. This is a temporary setting, and the alias can be reactivated by clicking on the toggle again. When set to OFF, senders will receive a bounce back or undeliverable message.
Delete an alias
-
Click on the trash can icon to the right of the alias you want to delete. Once an alias ending in @use.startmail.com is deleted, it can never be used again. The deletion is a permanent action. Senders will receive a bounce back or undeliverable message.
-
Be aware that there is a difference between aliases with your own domain and aliases with the @use.startmail.com domain. While an @use.startmail.com alias will be deleted irrevocably, an alias with your own domain can be created again with the same address. Email sent to a deleted alias will no longer be delivered to your mailbox. Confirm your action by clicking on Delete.
Filtering aliases
If you are using a lot of aliases, you may want to filter them. Click on Filter by on the top right of the Settings > Aliases page. Select the appropriate filters.
Sorting aliases
Sort your aliases by creation date (ascending/descending) or alias email address (ascending/descending).
