If you have been using a personal account with a StartMail address for some time and after a while come to the conclusion that you would prefer to use an e-mail address containing your own domain for your e-mail correspondence, we will describe the procedure here:
- Add domain
- Create domain account
- Important changes before transferring the subscription
- Transfer subscription
- Delete StartMail account ending in @startmail.com
Add domain
In a personal account, it is possible to add one single your own domains without additional fees. The prerequisite here is that you must bring your domain to us in order to set it up with StartMail.
You can read how to set up your own domain in our support article on setting up your own domain in a personal account.
Create a domain account
Once you have successfully verified your domain with StartMail, you can create an account with the verified domain from the group subscriptions.
The email address cannot be changed once it has been created. The password, which is only shown to you once during account creation, should be kept until the account is actually created and the password changed.
After logging in for the first time, you will be asked to add a recovery address. Enter and confirm a recovery address that you can still access if you delete the Manager/StartMail account.
Important changes before transferring the subscription
Before you transfer the subscription from a personal account to an account with your own domain, you should ensure that the following information has been adapted to the new group manager:
- Payment methods removed
- Recovery address (provided and confirmed)
Transfer ownership
Before the original group manager transfers the subscription to another person, we recommend deleting the payment details under ‘Settings’ > ‘Subscription’ > ‘Manage payment source’ > ‘Payment method’ > ‘Remove payment method’ if the new group manager is to be responsible for future payments. This is because the original group manager will no longer have access to these after the transfer. To transfer a subscription to another account holder, please follow this detailed support article on transferring ownership.
Delete StartMail account
Personal alias addresses created in your @startmail.com account are tied to the @startmail.com account. If you delete the account, you also delete the associated alias addresses.
Deleted alias addresses cannot be created again, they remain permanently blocked.
To delete the @startmail.com account, please follow this support article on how to delete your StartMail account after you have followed all the previous steps.
