In order to migrate your emails from a different email provider to StartMail, you can use our ShuttleCloud migration service.
With the ShuttleCloud service you can:
- migrate emails from an existing account already set up with another provider with its own domain to StartMail
- migrate emails/contacts from your previous provider and receive emails from your previous email account for 30 days in your StartMail inbox
- migrate emails from another StartMail account
We currently support up to 20 GB of Storage space for personal accounts and 30GB for business accounts. Please check first if it is enough space to receive the amount of data in your old mailbox. If not, please delete old emails from your previous mailbox first.
If you encounter difficulties when migrating from a business account, we recommend to migrate your emails and contacts manually through an IMAP-connection.

Migrate emails from an existing account already set up with another provider with its own domain to StartMail
To migrate emails from an existing address with its own domain to a StartMail account that should also have the same address with its own domain, you must first verify your own domain with StartMail. We describe the process for
An important point in this process is that for a successful migration of your emails from your own domain to your own domain, ONLY the domain verification (first TXT-record) must have taken place.
Neither the MX records nor the SPF record must have been set for this process, otherwise the emails cannot be successfully migrated to StartMail.
Under these conditions, you can then start your migration with the following general instructions.
Migrate Emails and Contacts from a different provider like Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook and receive emails from your previous email account for 30 days in your StartMail inbox
- To start your migration, click on Settings > Migration > Start Migration.
- Enter your StartMail password and click on Generate migration access code.
- Copy your migration access code and click on Go to migration portal.
- Click on Start.
- Choose the email provider that you wish to migrate from.
- You will then be asked to put in the account name for the account that you selected to migrate. Depending on the selected account, you might be redirected to sign in.

Click on Allow to give ShuttleCloud permission to access your account.

The source email address you would like to migrate from is automatically added, click on "Next".

Enter your StartMail address and the Migration access code you generated and copied in Step 3.
Click on Next. - Select, if you want to migrate "Emails", "Contacts" or "Emails and Contacts". If you'd like to set up an email forwarder from the account you are migrating from to your new StartMail inbox, select "Yes" and click "Start Migration".
Please note: If you still want to receive emails from your previous email account for 30 days, you should not remove the IMAP connection you set up for the migration, otherwise a regular migration of new emails cannot be guaranteed.
Also, ask your previous provider to see if they offer email forwarding or read our support article. - Click on Check migration status to be redirected to your StartMail account.
- On the "Checking status" page in your StartMail account you will see the progress of the migration.
- When the migration has been completed, you will see the Congratulations screen.
If you don´t want to Start another migration, we suggest to Go to the IMAP settings and remove the device "data-migration". - An email will be sent to your StartMail inbox, once the migration has been finished.

Now you will find your migrated emails in a designated folder in your Inbox.
- And your contacts can be found in a designated folder in Contacts.
Migrate emails from another StartMail account
Please be aware: At this point, it is not possible yet, to migrate contacts from another StartMail address. But this can be done manually by importing contacts.
- To start your migration, click on Settings > Migration > Start Migration in your destination account you want to migrate your emails to.
- Enter your StartMail password and click on Generate migration access code.
- Copy your migration access code and click on Go to migration portal.
- Click on Start.
- Click on Other, if you want to migrate from another StartMail account and enter the StartMail address, you want to migrate FROM. The password you have to enter here will be received by creating an IMAP connection within the StartMail account you entered on this page. To do this please follow the steps in the following article:

Then click on Next. -
Enter your StartMail address and the Migration access code you generated and copied in Step 3.
Click on Next. - Select Emails and click "Start Migration". Importing contacts from a StartMail account to a StartMail account via ShuttleCloud is not supported at this point.
- Click on Check migration status to be redirected to your StartMail account.
- On the "Checking status" page in your StartMail account you will see the progress of the migration.
- When the migration has been completed, you will see the Congratulations screen.
If you don´t want to Start another migration, we suggest to Go to the IMAP settings and remove the device "data-migration". - An email will be sent to your StartMail inbox, once the migration has been finished.
