To set up your StartMail account in Outlook for Windows 11 or macOS, follow the steps below. Please note that on Windows, this action will cause Microsoft to import all your StartMail emails into its cloud storage.
Please follow the instructions for your specific Operating System:
Outlook for Windows
- First make sure you have IMAP enabled in your StartMail account. You will then receive a 16 character device password in the StartMail settings, which you can use to set up the IMAP connection in your Outlook. This device password is different from your account password.
- If you are already using accounts in Outlook, scroll to the bottom of the left bar and click on Add account to add a StartMail account and go ahead with step 3.
- If you are opening Outlook for the first time, enter the StartMail address you want to set up directly and click Continue.
- Enter the 16-digit device password that you received in step 1 when you enabled IMAP in your StartMail WebMail and click Continue again.
- Read the next 5 Outlook dialogs carefully, as these will clearly interfere with your privacy if you agree to them.
If everything was entered correctly, your account has been created. The ads you see at the top of your emails have nothing to do with StartMail.
Outlook for macOS
- First, make sure you have a device password generated on the Settings page in your StartMail account. You can do so by following these instructions: Configure a trusted device / IMAP password. This is a sixteen character password and is different from your regular login password.
- Open Outlook, click on the + icon in the top left corner and click on Add Email Account or go to Tools > Accounts > Select the + icon in the bottom left and select the option Add an Account... (if this is the first time you open Outlook you will immediately land on the next step)
- Enter your StartMail email address in the window and click on Continue.
- Click on Sync directly with IMAP.
- Enter the sixteen character device password you generated earlier from the Settings screen in the Password field and click on Add Account. (For security reasons, your regular login password for your StartMail account will not work here.)
- You're all done.
